From old Nokia phones to magnetic tape – How «Obsolete» technology can thwart hackers

In a world dominated by artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure and increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, one unexpected security strategy is looking back rather than forward.

Cybersecurity experts, military organizations and aviation authorities are once again turning to technologies that were long considered outdated. From old mobile phones and paper maps to magnetic storage tapes, analog tools are gaining renewed importance for one simple reason: hackers have far less incentive to target them.

«Security by Antiquity»: when being old becomes an advantage

Finnish cybersecurity expert Mikko Hyppönen has described this approach as security by antiquity.

For years, he used Eudora, an email program that had long since stopped receiving support. His choice was not based on the idea that the software was technically more secure than modern alternatives. Instead, its extremely small user base made it far less attractive to cybercriminals.

The reasoning is straightforward: the fewer potential victims a system has, the less financial incentive attackers have to spend time and resources developing malware for it.

That does not mean outdated technology is inherently safer. For most users, keeping operating systems and security software up to date remains the best approach.

Why militaries are returning to maps and compasses

The return to older technologies is not limited to computers.

The war in Ukraine has highlighted the vulnerabilities associated with relying heavily on satellite navigation systems. Extensive GPS interference has created challenges for military operations, prompting a renewed emphasis on paper maps, laminated charts and traditional compasses as backup navigation tools.

A paper map does not require a satellite signal, battery or internet connection. More importantly, it cannot be electronically hacked or jammed in the same way as a digital navigation system.

The same principle has encouraged some countries to maintain traditional ground-based aviation navigation infrastructure as a backup rather than relying exclusively on GPS.

Old Nokia phones and the cybersecurity paradox

The same logic can also be applied to consumer technology.

Some security-conscious users have turned to older mobile phones, including Nokia devices running legacy operating systems. Such systems may contain known vulnerabilities and no longer receive modern security updates.

Yet they offer one unusual advantage: cybercriminals generally have little reason to invest heavily in attacking platforms used by very few people.

The greatest financial opportunities lie in the billions of modern Android and iPhone devices, where a successful attack can potentially reach a much larger pool of victims.

This is therefore not a question of absolute security, but of risk management: reducing the likelihood of becoming an attractive target in the first place.

The unexpected comeback of magnetic tape

Perhaps the most striking example can be found inside data centers.

Magnetic tape, a technology that dates back to the 1950s, has not disappeared. In fact, it remains an important solution for storing enormous volumes of data.

There are two major reasons.

First, tape can be used to create backups that are completely disconnected from networks. This makes it particularly valuable against ransomware attacks, because an attacker cannot easily access a backup that is physically offline.

Second, magnetic tape remains highly cost-effective for long-term storage and archiving of massive quantities of data.

As a result, governments, research institutions and large organizations continue to rely on tape for long-term data preservation, ranging from scientific datasets to extensive media archives.

The more digital the world becomes, the more valuable analog backups may be

Old technology is certainly not a magic solution to cybersecurity. An outdated operating system can contain serious vulnerabilities, and an old computer is not automatically secure.

What the renewed interest in analog tools does demonstrate, however, is an important principle: greater technological sophistication does not always translate into greater resilience.

As cyberattacks increasingly focus on the most widely used digital systems, a paper map, a compass, an offline backup—or even an old mobile phone—can provide something modern technologies often cannot: independence from the network.

The technology of the future, therefore, may not be entirely digital. It may also include some of the tools the world once considered permanently obsolete.
